Crazy for You: Stour and Avon Review

Another great review from the Stour and Avon magazine:

CRAZY FOR YOU, WIMBORNE MUSICAL THEATRE, TIVOLI, WIMBORNE

What better to complement a Summer evening than to see a show with song, dance and humour in abundance? Wimborne Musical Theatre chose Crazy for You, an award-winning production combining the wonderful songs of George and Ira Gershwin with a sprinkling of slapstick comedy, for a musical which was light, sparkling and bubbly.

Set in the 1930s, Bobby Child is a rich young banker who is totally stage-struck but also completely dominated by his fiancée of five years and a business woman mother. Leaving New York he travels to the run-down town of Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a theatre for the bank. There he meets the daughter of the owner of the Gaiety Theatre, falls in love with her and complications abound in the best tradition of musical comedy.

Lee Redwood proves his professional pedigree in every facet of Bobby, dancing and singing in a role which suits him down to the ground. Fiancée Irene – who doesn’t suit him so well – is a perfect part for the elegant Sally Ager and the other domineering woman (his Mother Lottie) is well played by Vanessa Wassell. The theatre owner Everett Baker is, like the town, rather run-down and Ron Kite captures that perfectly while Lank Hawkins (Andy Trant) strikes the right note as boss of the Saloon/Hotel. The cowboys of the town are bedazzled by the gorgeous Zangler Follies dancers led by Tess (well played by Karina McCormack) and bemused by her admirer, impresario Bela Zangler. He is given a touch of Marx Brothers comedy by Phil Evans and there are capable cameos by Jemma Cable (Patricia) David Elliott (Eugene) and Julia Wass as Patsy. It is Hermione Mason as the feisty Polly who steals the show for this reviewer, however, and the 16 year old student shows a maturity beyond her years. With a singing voice perfect for the musical comedy genre she also dances beautifully and her characterisation of the role is mesmerising – all this combined with a slim figure and lovely smile. Such a talented performer will surely have a theatrical career ahead of her – watch out for Hermione in the future.

The production team of Roy Joseph (Director) plus John Stringer who was in charge of music and the capable instrumentalists, together with Suzi de Villiers – stunning choreography – must be congratulated on a lively and entertaining production. Great costumes and sets too, to enhance this energetic performance by Wimborne Musical Theatre. In the words of that classic Gershwin song in the finale “Who Could Ask For Anything More?”

Crazy for You: SceneOne Review

The first review of Crazy for You (this week at The Tivoli) is in, and it’s a cracker! Linda Kirkman of SceneOne said:

IN 1930 a new musical, Girl Crazy, opened on Broadway and was a moderate success, running for eight months and with its score lauded as one of the Gershwins’ best. Fast forward to 1992 when the show, much re-written and with other notable Gershwin songs added, was re-launched as Crazy For You. It was a huge hit, winning a Tony Award for Best Musical and running for 1622 performances, and the subsequent London production racking up a three year run.

This WMT production, headed by Roy Joseph (director), John Stringer (musical director) and Suzy de Villiers (choreographer) only runs until Saturday, sadly, because the amount of love, care and sheer enthusiasm that has plainly gone into it deserves a much greater airing and those foot-tapping songs are still as enjoyable as ever.

The story is set in Deadrock, Nevada, where a New York banker and would-be performer, Bobby Child, has been sent to foreclose on an old theatre but decides instead to try to save it by calling on his chorus girl friends from NYC to join him in putting on a show. Oh, and he also falls madly in love with the only woman in the town, Polly Baker, and disguises himself as theatre impresario Bela Zangler with somewhat unfortunate consequences.

Strong characterisations in the two central roles are a must, and in this instance I really don’t think they could have been bettered. Sixteen year-old Hermione Mason, fresh from taking her GCSEs and in her first leading lady role, is an absolute natural on stage. She’s faultless as Polly Baker, singing, dancing and acting with real skill and with the loveliest of smiles. Look out for her in the West End in a few years’ time, because I’m sure she’ll be there.

Lee Redwood is rather more used to playing in drag these days – his panto dames are quite something – but he has donned more normal male attire to play Bobby Child and is absolutely superb in every way. There’s a lovely chemistry between him and Hermione and he also shows a great talent for comedy, never more so than in his ‘mirror’ scene with the real Bela Zangler, the latter excellently played by Phil Evans.

There are great characterisations in smaller roles too, not least from Sally Ager (Irene Roth) and Andy Trant (Lank Hawkins), and both male and female chorus shine, sing well and are beautifully animated. Dancing is particularly impressive, as are costumes and lighting, and there’s a smashing band too.

Who could ask for anything more?

Crazy for You: SceneOne Preview

SceneOne has kindly printed a preview of Crazy for You:

WIMBORNE Musical Theatre Society will be performing the smash-hit musical Crazy For You at the Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne, from June 18-21.

The show contains memorable Gershwin songs such as Bidin’ My Time, Someone To Watch Over Me, Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Nice Work If You Can Get It.

It centres round Bobby Child, the rich son of a banking family who is desperate to break into show-business. Sent by his mother to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre, he falls in love with Polly Baker, the daughter of the theatre owner, Everett, but his feelings are not reciprocated.

Bobby decides that rather than foreclose on the theatre he will put on a show to try and save it, but for reasons of his own he disguises
himself as impresario Bela Zangler, with whom Polly immediately falls in love.

Does the show work? Do Polly and Bobby finally get together? You’ll just have to go along to the Tivoli and find out!

Roy Joseph directs, Suzi de Villiers is choreographer, John Stringer is musical director and the cast includes Lee Redwood, Hermione Mason, Phil Evans and Sally Ager.
