About Annie
The musical 'Annie' is based upon
the Harold Gray comic strip 'Little Orphan Annie' which first
appeared in 1924. The comic strip was adapted by Thomas Meehan,
Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin and the show premiered on Broadway
on 21st April 1977 with Andrea McArdle playing the title role.
The show was an immediate success, gaining
11 Tony nominations and winning 7 (inlcuding Best Musical) and ran
for 2,377 performances, finally closing in 1983 and spawing a US
National tour and a UK production starring Sheila Hancock and Stratford
Johns.
A film version of 'Annie', starring
Albert Finney and Carol Burnett was released in 1982, but this differed
significantly from the stage version, with several new songs and
characters introduced and many of the original numbers cut.
Wimborne Musical Theatre are pleased
to be able to restore those numbers in their version of the show.
